What Your Job Will Be Like
The W87-1 Modification Program at Sandia National Laboratories is working with the NNSA, U.S. Air Force, and other national labs to develop a ground-based strategic warhead that improves on the safety and security elements of legacy weapons in the U.S. nuclear stockpile. This program is a critical element in our nation's nuclear deterrence strategy.

In this exciting and dynamic role, you may be performing several engineering functions, from crafting system design concepts, developing design definition, informing design through modeling and simulation, and qualifying innovative fabrication and assembly techniques. You will also be supporting systems and/or component engineering efforts across all phases of projects spanning from conceptual-design studies to full scale engineering. Along with fellow engineers, this role also involves engaging and collaborating regularly with personnel across multiple Sandia organizations, as well as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL), the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), production agencies throughout the NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE), and Department of Defense (DoD) organizations. The W87-1 Modification Program is in phase 6.3-development engineering. On any given day, Systems Engineers within this program may be called on to:
Assist with system-level design architecture and analysis that combines component parts and subsystems into a complete functional system.
Lead the development of product definition while incorporating manufacturing and assembly feedback.
Collaborate on maturation of requirements for specific areas or components.
Participate in integration activities with other systems engineers, product realization teams, and production agencies.
Provide technical consultations on critical design elements.
Participate in test planning to verify requirements and qualify hardware.
Prepare for presentations at technical design reviews.
Represent Sandia on multi-organizational project teams.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Livermore, CA. Some travel may be required for this position (up to 25%).
Qualifications We Require
PhD, Master's, or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a relevant STEM field; OR equivalent related experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development (in lieu of degree).
Academic or job experiences in areas such as: engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire
Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in above-stated relevant fields.
Experience working on engineering design, qualification, product development, or related modeling/simulation projects.
Familiarity with engineering modeling tools (Creo, SolidWorks, DOORs, GENESYS, MATLAB, etc.).
Experience with development of specifications for components and systems.
Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.
Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter in an ambiguous environment.
Knowledge and/or experience of system engineering concepts and principles.
About Our Team
The W87-1 System Engineering 4 department is one of the cross-site systems engineering organizations at the forefront of a program to modernize the W87-1. Systems Engineering 4 is responsible for the development of the mechanical war reserve system design, and partners with other W87-1 systems engineering organizations to establish and execute the system surety theme, cybersecurity, system integration and delivery, and program logistics. Engineers on our team are leveraging components and technology from other current Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) programs and development efforts.

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
