Job Description

We have opening for a Section Leader for the Electro-Magnetics Section (EMS). EMS consists of Section Staff, the Energy Manipulation Technology Group, the Plasma Engineering Group, the Plasma Operations Group, and three accelerator groups: Development, Operations, and Physics. The Section Leader will provide leadership in the section's technical areas, work with Engineering management, program leaders in Weapons Complex Integration, Global Security, NIF & Photon Science, Physical and Life Sciences, the Office of Defense Coordination, the ES&H functional area, and the Deputy Director's Office to deliver critical mission support and develop new business opportunities. This position is funded by a small fraction of effort; the majority of the employee's assignment will be through direct programmatic work not covered by this posting. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Formulate and execute short-term and long-term strategic goals for the section and Division as a member of the division's engineering management team.
  • Lead the EMS management team of Group Leaders and Supervisors in carrying out the day-to-day management tasks of the section. These include supporting the Division in policy development, resource allocation, hiring plans, capital equipment plans, and serving as the primary contact between NSED Management and the section members.
  • Serve as technical leader in planning and promoting technical development in new technology areas important to developing current and future business; collaborate with potential customers to assess needs and develop partnering relationships with appropriate project/group leaders.
  • Develop new business opportunities through vetting and review of new proposals for funded work.
  • Champion, develop and apply disciplined engineering, quality management, and project management best practices in support of the Section's customers.
  • Champion the organization in setting the highest standards of design, personnel and facility safety.
  • Write annual employee appraisals for direct reports and participate in ranking, salary management, and promote career development, mentoring, and technical guidance for section members.
  • Responsible for the general oversight and personal commitment to the goals of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, compliance with all ES&H regulations, good business practices, diversity, and equal opportunity.
  • Partner with the ES&H FAM and the Deputy Director to ensure the institution maintains a robust and compliant electrical safety program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and extensive related knowledge and experience and ability to champion, lead, and develop creative cutting edge solutions, principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Expert knowledge and extensive experience with state of the art technologies in at least one of the following areas: pulse-power, plasma and high energy physics, accelerators, flux compression generators, grounding and shielding under extreme conditions, and associated diagnostics/instrumentation systems.
  • Extensive experience in electromagnetic-related applications in WCI, GS, NIF&PS, PLS, and ODC programs.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
  • Extensive experience managing multi-disciplinary projects from initiation to closure.
  • Extensive leadership experience with personnel management, including supervision, hiring, writing performance appraisals, ranking, and salary management.
  • Broad knowledge and significant experience with the implementation of Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Extensive problem-solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently advise, counsel, recommend, and develop solutions on a wide variety of technical and programmatic issues.
  • Ability to be highly flexible and adapt to changes that are a result of changes in programmatic direction and LLNL policies.
  • Expert ability to communicate effectively under stressful situations, overcome setbacks, and resolve conflict in a positive and constructive manner.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree or PhD degree in Electronics Engineering or related field.
  • Recognized national-level expert in pulse-power or high-energy physics.
  • Experience leading state-of-the-art technology development.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory. Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).
