What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Laboratory Support Technologist to join a diverse team supporting research activities led by scientists and engineers in the Hydrogen Effects on Materials Laboratory (HEML). The HEML team designs, constructs, and operates a variety of systems to evaluate the properties of materials in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen environments. Technologists integrate subsystems for gas-handling of pressure environments, hydraulic mechanical controls, electrical diagnostics and controls, and data acquisition.

In this role you will be expected to work independently or with other members of the HEML team concurrently on multiple projects to:

+ Assemble experimental equipment, perform tests, and collect data at the direction of technical staff

+ Take a leadership role to manage administrative needs of the HEML staff, including managing waste and chemical inventory, ordering supplies, coordinating test specimen fabrication, as well as managing equipment calibration, maintenance, recertification and procurement

+ Communicate and collaborate with customers, facilities, service organizations, vendors and research collaborators (both internal and external)

+ Learn new tasks including operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment

+ Develop safety documentation and maintain a safe working environment

Qualifications We Require:

+ Associate's degree in engineering or other relevant field; or equivalent experience

+ Experience with common office software (such as the Microsoft Office Suite) and the ability to manage spreadsheets and graphs

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, or equivalent work experience

+ Experience supporting a diverse team

+ Ability to organize tasks on multiple projects and manage sensitive information

+ Understanding of instrumentation used in mechanical testing (e.g., thermocouples, strain gauges, load transducers, etc.)

+ Strong computer skills, including experience with data analysis and computer-aided design and drafting (e.g. experience with SolidWorks, Python, MATLAB)

+ Strong written and communication skills

About Our Team:

The Hydrogen and Materials Science Department provides expertise to both Sandia and the Nation to advance the infrastructure necessary to promote the use of hydrogen and its isotopes in areas relevant to Sandia's energy and nuclear deterrence missions. Staff conduct research that spans fundamental science to engineered materials in nationally recognized experimental facilities for hydrogen science. Focus areas include: fundamental understanding of material structure and behavior with respect to compatibility and aging in gaseous environments, analysis of hydrogen's long-term impact on structural materials, inform hydrogen safety codes and standards, gas behavior for risk analysis, development of solar thermochemical technology for hydrogen production, and solid-state and liquid storage for light duty vehicles and stationary applications. This expertise is applied to hydrogen end-use (e.g. air, marine, rail) application feasibility and performance assessments with industry partners. Security Clearance:
