DescriptionWe have an opening for a Communications Director to
support LLNL's National Ignition Facility, the world's most
powerful and energetic laser facility. You will work under
consultative direction to lead a broad scope of functions
associated with strategic communications, policies, procedures, and
systems that may have significant impact and high visibility. This
position is within the Technical Information Department matrixed to
the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS)
Directorate.In this role, you will
- Use expert in-depth knowledge of technical communications and
comprehensive knowledge of related areas to lead significant and
highly visible projects that have institutional and national impact
including delegating assignments to multidisciplinary teams in
support of technical communications projects/programs.
- In collaboration with NIF&PS senior management, develop,
implement, strongly influence, and lead an overarching strategic
communication plan to increase the understanding of, visibility,
and support for NIF&PS among a wide variety of audiences.

- In conjunction with the Office of Strategic Communications
(OSC), develop key messages to communicate complex information to
multiple audiences through a variety of communications platforms,
including digital, print, and social media.
- Serve as the NIF&PS communications subject matter expert
and as a key advisor to the NIF&PS Principal Associate Director
and senior management team, providing long-range strategic and
tactical guidance, advice and counsel on both internal and external
matters pertaining to strategic messaging and agenda content for
NIF&PS interactions and visits, policies, procedures, and
objectives.
- Serve as NIF&PS's primary partner to the OSC to execute key
communications efforts while ensuring organizational consistency,
timeliness, and effective engagement.
- Provide direction to and collaborate with NIF&PS Document
Services team to manage all internal and external NIF&PS
publications, newsletters, website, and materials to ensure message
consistency, effectiveness, and audience appropriateness.
- Establish, communicate, and maintain a process for collecting
and tracking to closure, action items resulting from visits and to
regularly measure the success of communication efforts.
- Oversee the budget and monitor expenditures working with
resource management staff; partner with TID group and division
leaders to meet staffing and budget needs and leverage best
practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security
clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's Degree in a field relevant to technical
communications such as English, communications, journalism,
business, engineering or a scientific area, or the equivalent
combination of education and related experience in technical
communications.
- Extensive experience implementing and leading an effective
corporate or government communications programs, identifying and
implementing technology solutions to meet requirements, and leading
and managing high-level complex projects with a diverse group of
exempt and non-exempt technical communications staff.
- Extensive experience serving as a subject matter expert to
organizational leaders and senior management with significant
knowledge of the organization and its organizational structures, as
well as thorough knowledge of the organization's key
stakeholders.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with specialized technical
concepts, methods, techniques, and practices related to technical
communications; subject matter expert in a core communications
discipline (e.g., technical writing, graphic arts,
photography).
- Advanced interpersonal and communication skills to effectively
establish and maintain highly productive working relationships with
a broad cross-section of management, technical, scientific, and
administrative personnel.
- Experience effectively interacting with and influencing various
levels of personnel, including senior management, internal and
external to an organization, with effective and advanced problem
solving, decision making, and skills necessary to persuade,
influence, or convince.
- Extensive experience leading and overseeing technical
communications activities for a large organization, institutional
entity in a scientific/technical environment or national security
organization in a fast-paced environment. Experience developing and
managing budgets.Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in marketing, digital media, or related
field.
- Extensive knowledge of organizational structures of LLNL's key
stakeholders (e.g., DOE, DoD, Congress, and sister
Laboratories).
- Significant experience in a national laboratory or
science-related position in marketing and/or
