Job DescriptionWe have multiple openings for Applied Physicists/Engineers with an emphasis on accelerator technology. You will execute a variety of complex accelerator-based experiments with a focus on design, optics, diagnostics, simulations, induction, and other technically challenging problems. You will travel as necessary to interact with sponsors and customers. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering DirectorateThis position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.In this role you will* Independently develop and assess accelerator design and diagnostics, provide advanced analysis and solution to complex problems that may not be well defined.* Serve as the primary technical contact on a multidisciplinary team to guide analysis activities and lead the design of accelerator-based experiments. Write regular progress reports and prepare written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results.* Maintain an awareness of technical literature in assigned areas.* Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.* Travel as necessary to interact with collaborators, sponsors and customers and conduct experiments.* Adhere to the highest standards of personal and facility safety in performing tests and experiments.* Perform other duties as assigned.Additional Job Responsibilities, At The SES.4 Level* Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others.* Provide expert-level capabilities for highly complex accelerator design and analysis initiatives.* Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in identified areas, routinely interacting with senior management and/or sponsors across the Laboratory on advanced technical projects.Qualifications* Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.* PhD degree in physics, engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.* Significant experience in and advanced knowledge of accelerator physics.* Demonstrated record of leading advanced top-quality research in relevant areas of physics and engineering.* Significant experience working effectively and independently in a multidisciplinary, team-oriented research environment. * Demonstrated self-motivation and initiative in addressing challenging problems.* Ability to travel.* Advanced verbal and written communication and presentation skills necessary to author advanced technical and scientific reports, publications, invited papers, and to deliver scientific presentations and provide advice to managementAdditional Qualifications At The SES.4 Level* Highly advanced experience presenting and dissemination of highly advanced research results at scientific conferences and peer-reviewed publications, in open and/or classified environments.
